Best Award of Excellence – Poster Presentation at The 17th ICERD
A collaborative team from the Institute of Environmental Rehabilitation and Conservation (ERECON), Japan, together with volunteer students from the Faculty of Agricultural Biosystems Engineering (FABE) at the Royal University of Agriculture (RUA), has received the Best Award of Excellence – Poster Presentation at the 17th International Conference on Environment and Rural Development (ICERD 17), held at the Royal University of Agriculture, Cambodia.
The research entitled:
“Development and Practical Evaluation of Bio-Briquettes from Cassava Stem Waste for Sustainable Rural Energy Use in Cambodia”
focuses on promoting the utilization of bio-briquettes produced from cassava stem residues after harvest as an alternative cooking fuel for small households in a rural community in Siem Reap Province, Cambodia. The study aims to encourage the efficient use of locally available biomass resources as renewable energy, contributing to reduced household energy costs and improved agricultural waste management.
The research was led by Professor Machito Mihara from the Faculty of Regional Environment Science, Tokyo University of Agriculture, and Ms. Keiko Aoki, Senior Researcher at the Institute of Environmental Rehabilitation and Conservation (ERECON), with participation from five FABE students:
The findings demonstrate that converting cassava stem residues into bio-briquettes provides several benefits to rural communities, including:
This achievement highlights the capability and active engagement of FABE students in developing technological solutions for communities, while promoting research that supports sustainable rural and environmental development.
